Parishscapes Project 2007 - 2010

        Parishscapes Autumn 2008 Update

It has been a very successful 1st year for the community heritage project. With the help of a variety of

organisations and volunteers and the huge support from the public, the project has managed to achieve its targets

  • thanks to the Devon Records Office and their contacts, we have been able to digitise all 34 tithe maps spanning the whole of the AONB

  • with the help of all our volunteers from the various parishes, who laboriously transcribed all of the apportionment data, we are now able to proceed to the next stage, i.e. digitising this new information

  • we have also started the geo-rectification process – matching the digitised tithe maps to modern Ordnance Survey maps – and thanks to the invaluable assistance of Martin Smith, this has now been completed for approximately half the parishes

  • the next step will be to match the apportionment data to the digitised tithe maps to enable users to view and compare the information and to make this information available on our website

  • 75 copies of the maps have now been supplied to local communities and schools and used as a basis for a variety of projects

  • the very popular Parishscapes Conference “Reading between the lines” took place last April. It attracted some 80 participants and brought together a range of speakers from the Devon County Council Historic Environment to a Mill Historian. This collective working has assisted  in the develoment of a hub of interested parties in a number of parishes

  • in May 2008 Parishscapes supported the Uplyme Exhibition on Farming   where the Uplyme tithe map was put good use. The exhibition was extremely successful with approximately 1000  people attending the event

  • the project also supported an Ottery St Mary Heritage Society exhibition with the loan of some audio visual equipment. The exhibition featured several of the Parishscapes Oral History Interviews

  • a total of 14 oral history DVD recordings are now archived at the Devon Records Office covering a wide range of rural history as well as practices such as brick making, lime quarrying, farming and tannery working

  • presentation talks have taken place at large number of Parish Councils and Local History and Archaeological Societies

  • there was a good turn out for the 3 Parishscapes Walks held so far :-

Colyford (Colin Pady) - took place around Colyford and attended by over 40 people

Woodbury (Cressida Whitton) - Woodbury Castle, attended by 22 people

Uplyme (Graham Davies)  - attended by 15 people

For the future we have a second Parishscapes Conference planned in April 2009, Tithe Map Training for the Otter Valley

Association, formation of the ‘Disappeared Houses’ Study Group, an Archaeological Surveying Training Day as well as further

Parishscapes Walks and a number of speaking engagements.
