The East Devon AONB Community Project Fund has made a contribution to the following projects:

Sustainability and Business related Projects

Sustainable Axe Valley Enterprises (SAVE Trail)

This exciting new trail spotlights fourteen enterprises, organisations or individual properties, in and around the Axe Valley, that are opening their doors to enable you to find out more about renewable energy, energy efficiency, alternative transport, recycling and land management that benefits landscape and biodiversity. To find out more see the rest of the leaflet produced which accompanys the map above. Events will take place to spotlight activities on the Trail, such as the Axe Valley Pedallers National Bike Week cycle ride which called into see Mike Goddard's electric vehicles. The trail has now won the 'Greening Devon' category at the 2005 DEBI awards, Nov 2005. See the East Devon AONB events pages for future opportunities or download this booking form for 'Introduction to solar energy at home' courses offered at Dalwood Hill House April 06 to September 06.

Cultural and Educational Projects

Celebrating East Devon Meadows

Meadows Project

Meadows Project

Meadows Project

In an imaginative project, a local artist, Julia Hilton has made a record of the rich variety of wildflowers that can be found in hay meadows within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The flower and seed heads have been rolled into tablets of clay to give a detailed outline of their shapes and structure. The clay tablets have then been fired and glazed to form butter dishes and cheese platters which will be exhibited as a series of wall pieces at a number of venues around the AONB.

This artistic technique has been carried out in meadows at Blacklake Farm and Gays Farm to provide a record of how the flowers in the meadows vary according to the soil type and past management. Traditional hay meadows can boast over 50 varieties of flower and grasses while modern rye grass meadows may only support 2 or 3 varieties. Flowers in hay meadows also support a large number of butterflies and other insects that are not found within the rye grass meadows.
