Making it Local webfilm - get a feel for what this valuable rural funding programme is all about.....

Members of an Estonian Local Action Group, the West Estonian Islands Partnership, visited the East Devon and Blackdown Hills AONBs in April 2010. The Estonians visited local businesses whose projects have benefited from grants awarded by Making it Local, or its predecessor LEADER+ or the AONB's Sustainable Development Funds.  They also had the opportunity to discuss the projects with members of the Making it Local team, including the Chairman, Devon County Councillor Paul Diviani, and Vice Chairman, Mike Ellingham of the National Farmers Union.

Local film-maker, Justin Owen, was commissioned to make a documentary of the visit and followed the Estonians to capture footage of the various businesses and projects, as well as many of the key points raised along the way. The film was premiered at the visitors' accommodation on their last night and they were able to take home copies on DVD.  The film was also presented at the April Making it Local meeting at Bicton College, and this edited version gives you a real flavour of the RDPE programme availble to communities and businesses in this area...

  • Who can benefit from this funding programme.

What is 'making it local'?

The aim of programme is to 'use the outstanding environmental quality and local human potential of the area as a springboard for sustainable economic growth'. In case you haven't heard, our programme is called ‘Making it local’ - which is what it should encourage and do!

We will be funding businesses, community groups and other organisations whose ideas fit with the three main themes of the programme

  • Raising business performance and local employment
  • Connecting with communities
  • Optimising sustainable local resource use

These are examples of projects funded so far

There is also more detail in the 50 page bid document if you want to read it!

The 'Making it local' area of benefit is made up of the two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) plus our market and coastal towns of Wellington, Axminster, Chard, Honiton, Budleigh Salterton, Seaton, Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary.

Who's who?

Jenny Archard is the Programme Manager. Two part-time Project Development Workers; Hattie Winter (covering Blackdown Hills) and Nicola Buckingham (covering the East Devon AONB area) are supporting applicants with Carrie Mason providing overall support to the team and rogramme Management Group.

This programme is to be driven by the local community, so that we are responsive to local needs.  For it to do that, it has a Programme Management Group (elected 19 November 08 at a meeting attended by over 45 representatives from across the area) or Local Action Group that is made up of representatives from different sectors and with different skills. A ‘Shadow’ group had steered development of the new programme up to this point.

Background

The South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) formally launched Local Action (24 Sept 08). Local Action is a part of the Rural Development Programme for England, which comprises EU monies.

‘Making it local’ received its award from Sir Harry Studholme (now SWRDA Chairman, left in image) and was represented by Cllr Paul Diviani, myself (Jenny Archard) and Chris Woodruff (East Devon AONB) (left to right)

'Making it local' is one of four succesful programmes in Devon but you can also find out more about other areas of funding linked to supporting the rural economy being delivered through the Rural Development Programme for England on this useful website provided by Devon Renaissance.

Any questions do come back to me;
