The Landscape of East Devon AONB
The landscape character of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as the Blackdown Hills AONB and wider East Devon District, has been defined in the document called the Landscape Character Assessment and Management Guidelines (published 2008).
The building blocks of our landscape are defined in this assessment by some 129 land description units which can be agglomerated into 13 landscape character types. This assessment of the landscape and the development of a series of management guidelines for each landscape character type allows us to target actions, respond to consultations for development or land management proposals and make recommendations for project proposals in the AONB.
A similar character assessment for the historic environment has been carried out by Devon County Council. The Historic Landscape Characterisation of Devon provides us with an assessment process that can be linked to the Landscape Character Assessment and in time provide an integrated approach to our management guidelines.
