Outstanding Community Spirit Triumphs at East Devon Acland Awards

East Budleigh Village Green named as winner of the East Devon AONB’s Acland Award for sustainable communities 2019.

East Budleigh Village Green has been awarded the prestigious Acland Award by the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership for their fantastic efforts to promote sustainability within their community.

The local group was recognised for their work in fundraising £80,000 to rejuvenate their village green; replacing damaged children’s play park equipment, renovating the village hall and creating a social hub to encourage social events and involve the whole community.

The Acland Award ceremony, sponsored by Humberts Estate Agents and Higher Wiscombe Holiday Cottages, was hosted at Seaton Tramway, as part of the East Devon AONB Annual Meeting.

Special recognition went to Colyton & Colyford Memory Café and Beer Men’s Shed groups, who were highly commended on the night for their contributions to the sustainability and wellbeing of their communities.

Other fantastic projects nominated for the award were Axewoods Cooperative, Bat Friendly Beer, Sidmouth Plastic Warriors, Wild Woodbury and Beer Women’s Institute.

Chris Woodruff, East Devon AONB Manager, praised the impact of each of the nominated community initiatives: “Sustainability is about supporting people, places and their ability to prosper. Each of our nominees have proven that by working in collaboration and with purpose, groups can achieve significant results.”

“Our winners have managed to support their whole community, bringing people of all generations together and improving their local environment, which in turn has brought benefits to local businesses, including the village hall and shop.”

On receiving the Acland Award winner’s trophy, presented by Lord Ewen Cameron of Dillington, Committee Chair Mike Pulley, said “This award is incredibly important to us as it helps recognise publicly the effort, generosity and enthusiasm that has gone into making a difference within our community. We are hugely grateful for all the local support we have received.”
