COVID-19 UPDATE – THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMME IS ON HOLD UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
Following the successful Art on the East Devon Way and Tree to Sea projects, the East Devon AONB have again partnered with the Thelma Hulbert Gallery to explore creative connections with the landscape and our natural environment.
Culture and Climate 2020 is a programme of exhibitions, symposiums and events that are set against the context of the Devon Climate Emergency declaration and joint project-partner, the University of Exeter’s declaration of an environment and climate emergency. Audiences will be invited to participate in a range of activities taking place at the University, Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG) and diverse locations across East Devon.
The exhibition ‘ARTIST ROOMS Richard Long – Being in the Moment’ launched the project at THG in Honiton on February 22. An acclaimed British land artist, Richard Long’s work is built around ‘walking in nature’ and is part of a touring collection of over 1600 artworks, by more than 42 major international artists, owned by the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate.
Ruth Gooding, Manager/Curator, says, “Thelma Hulbert Gallery is uniquely situated, nestled between two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and only 9 miles from the World Heritage Jurassic Coast. Walking is a very popular pursuit in the area, and we hope this exhibition will inspire audiences to rethink walking as not just a journey from a to b, but as an art form in itself.”

• University of Exeter presents Creative Dialogues with Sir Richard Long, 13 May 2020 at the Beehive, Honiton’s community arts venue, following a guided tour of Being in the Moment by Curators at Thelma Hulbert Gallery.
Creative Dialogues is an ‘in-conversation’ event that is part of the Arts and Culture University of Exeter public programme, offering the audience a rare opportunity to join internationally renowned professionals in person and learn first-hand about their inspirational careers and life works.
• Culture and Climate Change 2020 Itinerant Symposium, June 18 & 19, 2020 at various locations across East Devon including Exmouth, Seaton, Thelma Hulbert Gallery and School of Art and Wellbeing.
This interdisciplinary symposium is strengthening a dialogue between East Devon and the University of Exeter on culture and climate change; sharing information across academia, policy makers, creative practitioners and the public to enhance our cultural eco-systems and regional strategies.

Mike will be one of the speakers in a full-day event that explores the relationship between communities and research. The Exchange Symposium is co-devised by Arts and Culture, and Public Engagement with Research at the University of Exeter.
