We need volunteers to help us explore East Devon’s historic hedgerows to survey blackthorn for the beautiful eggs of the Brown Hairstreak butterfly.

Keen eyes and patience are needed for this rewarding conservation work, but no experience is necessary as full training and instructions will be provided before the egg hunting commences!

When/where?

November/ December are two of the best months to look for eggs as they are freshly laid and have not had a time to be predated.

Full dates and locations are to be confirmed once we have gathered all expressions of interest.

Get involved

If you would like to get involved, please contact: pete.youngman@eastdevon-nl.org.uk by 31 October 2020.

We will then be in touch with full details on how to book a spot and safety measures in place.

Saving special species

The Brown Hairstreak butterfly is one of 8 endangered species we are supporting through our East Devon AONB Species Recovery project – raising awareness and promoting action. Find out more here: http://www.eastdevon-nl.org.uk/…/colchester-declaration

The survey is being organised by Butterfly Conservation, with the Saving Devon’s Treescapes Project and Devon Biological Records Centre, as part of a county wide project in Devon to support this elusive butterfly that has sadly experienced a dramatic decline in recent years. www.butterfly-conservation.org/in-your-area/devon-branch
