Our response

East Devon AONB Partnership Final Response

This response should be seen as sitting alongside the National Association for AONBs response, which has been developed and agreed in partnership with all AONBs teams and Partnership Chairs.

Background

In May 2018 the government asked for an independent review into whether the protections for National Parks and AONBs are still fit for purpose. In particular, what might be done better, what changes might help and whether the definitions and systems in place are still valid.

The ‘Glover’ review

An expert advisory group, led by Julian Glover, conducted a comprehensive review of our protected landscapes and presented 27 wide-ranging proposals to the government. Their final report was published on 21 September 2019.

Responding to the review

The government released its long-awaited response to those proposals in January 2022, setting out ambitious changes to increase access to nature and ensure protected landscapes can deliver more for climate, nature, people and places for the next 70 years and beyond.

Public consultation

Implementing some aspects of the response to the review will require changes to legislation, subject to securing parliamentary time. The Government asked for public views on support for these proposed legislative changes, their potential effects and any wider views on other aspects of their response.
